Mechanisation on the farm enables a relatively small team to produce a wide variety of crops using a number of tractor-mounted machines to help with preparing the land, planting and then weed control during the growing season. Green manures are used to maintain and improve the fertility of the land: Red Clover provides nitrogen fixation in the soil and is used in the cropping rotation; Phacelia is also used as a weed suppressor with the benefit of its flowers providing abundant nectar for pollinating insects to serve all the surrounding crops.
Kensons has adapted to the dry summers by collecting water in the winter into two large storage ponds to provide irrigation during the summer; more recently a bore hole has been dug to supplement the ponds.
This was an inspiring visit but it was clear that it takes a lot of hard work and dedication. We are very grateful for this privilege to see how they work and how well they are doing.
