Planet Shaftesbury Meeting – 16th April 2026

Present:        Robin, Karen, Emma, John, Christina, Rachel T, Jess, Liz, Lucy, Neil, Ed, Anna.

Robin Walter volunteered to Chair the meeting and Ed Bersey took the minutes

 

Actions and follow up points from last month:

  • Karen confirmed funding has been confirmed for four films and food leaflet has been approved from SuSAC.

  • Films: Karen and team are looking at various venues. Recently planned PowerStation film was pulled. NEB film is being organised by Anna Baker – Posters now available. Anna gave some detail on what the NEB film event would be like and asked for some volunteers for refreshments – Emma volunteered. There was discussion around the Panel for the NEB film showing – the panel will likely be Anna Baker (chair), Robin Walter, Neil Morisetti, Lucy Young.

  • Chair asked for update on proposed business cards for PS with Donation link. Karen asked if these could be ready by the NEB film on 27th – Ed took the action.

  • Rachel T gave an update on the food leaflet in Rachel B’s absence

  • Karen contacted Robbie Martin, from the building company developing Places for People – he said he would come to the NEB film to meet more PS people.

  • Christina gave an update on a survey that her and Rachel B completed which was sent to PS

  • Chair asked for progress update on Rachel B’s diagram for PS. Christina spoke about the diagram created by Rachel B regarding the structure of Planet Shaftesbury.  Rachel is away so this is rolled over to next month.

  • Group visit to Kenson’s (local organic farm) – Lucy gave an update – Liz at Kenson’s is keen to do it and normally done in May/June time and normally in early evening. Lucy had an idea that we could hold a monthly PS meeting at the farm

  • Lucy asked if 89% interviews on Alfred radio were available via a link anywhere. Karen explained action is with Keri to update PS at some point when he has new people to interview for the 89% project and provide links to interviews.

  • Lucy gave an update on Hedgehogs – a chap called Shaun is now recording hedgehog sightings – dead or alive. Lucy asked if he were to develop a digital map could we surface this on the PS website.

  • Emma expressed thanks for attendance and help with Earth Hour at St Peter’s. £150 was collected and donated to WWF. Lucy expressed her thanks and that many people had fed back to hear what a great event it was.

  • Chair asked about posting on social media – Robin took action to speak to Beth

 

Actions and Follow ups

  1. Ed to create PS Business Cards – to be completed by 27th April (NEB film) 

  2. Richard T to update PS at next meeting on Gillingham show progress

  3. Ed to completed electronic version of food leaflet for website

  4. Discuss Rachel B’s diagram of Planet Shaftesbury Activities.

  5. Lucy to agree date with Kensons and to write a sentence or two for newsletter.

  6. Keri (via Karen) to update PS when he has new people to interview for the 89% project

  7. Robin to speak to Beth about social medial posting

 

 

 

New Meeting Topics

  • Anna asked for help documenting and taking photos at the NEB film event – Ed volunteered

  • Ed mentioned the new donation page is available directly from the PS website Home page

  • Lucy asked about newsletter dates – confirmed at end of meeting

  • Liz asked about local groups and events that she could share with St Peter’s Youth group for Friday night meetings. Anna offered to share some local groups, Lucy mentioned that WWF had some resources that may help. John mentioned that Dorset Wildlife Trust has many events

  • John gave an update on rivers, in the wake of “Dirty Business” TV program – there are three types of river monitoring: River Fly monitors invertebrates from within the river;  Water Guardians monitor for pollution from the banks (both run by Dorset Wildlife Trust); and Fresh Water Watch test twice per year with kits in April & September.  This is happening this weekend and they are giving out chemical kits to test for Nitrates and Phosphates. All data goes back to Dorset Wildlife Trust who use it to raise awareness with authorities. Wessex Water of the local responsible water group. Lucy suggested that John write a short piece for the next newsletter as it is so topical – this should include relevant links for people to get involved. Karen mentioned that Caz Dennet from XR in Weymouth chooses not to pay the proportion of her water bill that is for sewerage.

  • Karen mentioned that the Government are providing grants for local environmental project ideas. Karen and Rachel B had a meeting to discuss moving this forward.

  • Robin raised the fact that he currently monitors the PS email account and has more recently been acting as editor for the Newsletter. He agreed to do three newsletters and is about to do the last one.  Robin asked for volunteers to take over. No takers in the room, Robin to put it on the WhatsApp group.

  • ACTION: Robin to put on the whatsapp group. (Since the meeting Diana Harris has agreed to do the next 3 newletters – many thanks!)

 

Actions and Follow ups

  1. Karen to contact Keri for NEB event.

  2. Robin to add Liz to WhatsApp group in order that she can contact people.

  3. John to write article on water monitoring and submit for next newsletter.

  4. Rachel B to follow up on and report back on government environmental grants for towns.

  5. Robin to add message to WhatsApp asking for volunteers to take over Newsletter editing from him.

  6. Agreed next Newsletter deadline – 29th April – next newsletter to go out on 1st May

  7. Next meeting: Thursday 21st May
