"Rivers near you might be turning into plastic waterways.
WHAT IS YOUR MP DOING ABOUT IT?"
PLEASE help us by asking our MP Simon Hoare to pledge for plastic-free rivers:
"A study of UK rivers by Greenpeace UK has found plastic in all 13 rivers with the River Mersey containing proportionally more plastic pollution than the infamous Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an area recognised by scientists as one of the most plastic-polluted expanses of water on earth.
That's shocking. I am writing as your constituent to ask that you pledge your support for a flagship Environment Bill that puts an end to plastic pollution, cleans up our environment and restores nature.
That means:
- Backing legally binding targets to radically reduce the production and use of single-use plastic and put us on course to end all waste entering the environment for good.
- Speaking directly to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Chancellor of the Exchequer about the need for this Bill to guarantee ambitious targets on single-use plastic reduction, healthy air, clean water, thriving wildlife and liveable green spaces, with a powerful watchdog to enforce them.
- Signing the Greener UK Charter for the Environment that sets out in detail what an ambitious Environment Bill should include.
We’ve all seen harrowing images of plastics in our oceans, but this problem is right on our doorstep.
To fix it, we need serious action. Recycling alone will not come close to meeting the challenge that faces us, particularly as plastic production is set to quadruple over the next twenty years. We need legislation to urgently reduce the amount of plastic that we use in order to end our pollution crisis and let our waterways thrive again. But it doesn’t stop there - the pollution in our rivers is indicative of an even greater problem - the decline of our natural world. We need the government to show leadership and restore not just the rivers that connect us, but also the air we breathe and the soil where nature takes root.
That is why I need you to represent my views and pledge to actively call for a strong Environment Bill."
