About the Event

A session to reflect on what equity means for the food & farming movement, and how Farming the Future can best support this. This description taken from their publicity for the session. Register through Eventbrite using this link.

About this event For three years, Farming the Future has worked to serve a diverse network of land-workers, educators, researchers, lobbyists, activists, organisations and funders, who are dedicated to transforming the current industrial food system. To further our goal of facilitating the food and farming movement to build a system of regenerative food production and land use that furthers social and environmental justice, we are bringing members of the movement together to collectively imagine how equity can play a key role in the future of Farming the Future. Our third and final seed sowing session will be dedicated to the topic of equity.

We know that our community needs equity to be actively resourced and prioritised, and that supporting equity is more than just a principle or a value, but also a very practical and material need. In our 2021 grant round, equity was one of the key factors in our decision-making.

However, we have learned that there are a range of understandings across our community and networks of what is meant by equity, and that there are many different on which it can be enacted. Given this, we want to gain a better understanding of what you, our community, understand by equity, and what Farming the Future can be doing to support and promote it.

Only by listening to your ideas, feedback and expertise can we make sure that equity is firmly rooted at the heart of what we do at Farming the Future.

In the session, we will explore:

  1. Different dimensions, understandings and definitions of equity. What does equity mean to you? What could it mean?
  2. What can FTF do to support equity in the movement?
  3. How can FTF support a shared understanding of equity across the movement?

The insights from these sessions will be used to inform the new vision and strategy of Farming the Future, which is currently in development.

We hope you will join us to collectively imagine a world in which equity is at the heart of the food and farming movement. What would this look like? What practices do we need to resource, and what norms do we need to promote?

We will be starting conversations at the following times:

  • 2:30 – What does equity mean to you?
  • 3:35 – How can FTF support equity & a shared understanding across the movement?

Resources for participation

It is important to us that a lack of resources does not act as a barrier to participation in this process. We are open to paying for people’s time or for support needs such as child care if that will enable you to contribute. Please let us know what you need by emailing olivia@farmingthefuture.uk and we can have an open and transparent conversation about what you need.
