About the Event

Charles is an enthusiastic practitioner of no dig which he has found improves soil drainage, gives fewer weeds and pests, and increases the harvest per area and compost used. He is known for the superb vegetable and salad produce he sells and has sold from his bio-intensive, no dig gardens on a range of soil types. He has written several books and appeared on both TV and radio. Charles' talks are enjoyable and informative - and very popular.

Monty Don (BBC Gardeners' World) has said of him: "Charles has become the guru of no dig growing. He's a really good grower of organic and fabulous produce. I'm a convert now, one should dig as little as possible."

No dig keeps carbon in the soil as well as making it healthier. The approach is a good fit with what people in the Planet Shaftesbury network care about. We're all encouraged to eat more plant-based meals. Some of us are interested in growing our own veg and salads and want easy ways to do it. A few of us, including at Shaftesbury Homegrown, are already experimenting with no dig and want to know more. By hosting Charles' talk in the town, Planet Shaftesbury's growers hope to share his expertise with as many other gardeners, allotment holders and other local people aspiring to 'grow their own' as we can fit into the Town Hall.
