The Nurturing Nature project is one of 20 projects that form the Cranborne Chase & Chalke Valley

Landscape Partnership Scheme (Chase & Chalke), made possible through funding from the National

Lottery Heritage Fund. The project is being delivered as part of this wider scheme and is managed by the

Wiltshire and Swindon Biological Records Centre, in collaboration with Wiltshire Wildlife Trust.

The Nurturing Nature project is focused on collecting data on the distinctive flora and fauna of the Chase

& Chalke area within Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The habitats of

Cranborne Chase include chalk grassland, chalk streams, arable fields, and small woodlands. The

project aims to train over 100 new volunteers, with little or no experience in wildlife surveying, to become

‘biological recorders’ in their local area. We aim to use this data to improve our understanding of

biodiversity in the area, and provide a new baseline of information, which we can use to inform future

conservation projects in the area too.

The team have been arranging a vast range of training activities for our volunteers, based both online

and in-person, run by a variety of wildlife experts, nature organisations and local groups. In February and

March, we have courses which are being delivered by our partners at the Species Recovery Trust, the

Field Studies Council, Acer Ecology and the People’s Trust for Endangered Species. These cover

identification of grasses, aquatic plants, woodland flowers, trees, fungi, reptiles, beetles and mammal

tracks and signs. We also have lots more training arranged for later on in the year covering more plants,

birds, barn owls, bats, a multitude of mammals and bumblebees. There is also scope to add lots more

training based on the interest of our volunteers.

Over the next few months, we will be delivering many community events to reach out to local

communities across Wiltshire, Dorset and Hampshire to tell people more about the training programme.

In Shaftesbury, we have two upcoming Coffee and Cake Mornings at the Ugly Duckling Café scheduled
