About the Event

Could an occasional car meet your needs and save you money? Would you like to support a car club in Shaftesbury?

Electric vehicles emit no greenhouse gasses, nitrogen oxide, or exhaust particulates. New fossil fuel vehicles will be banned by 2030. However, electric cars are expensive to purchase and, even if they were more affordable, simply replacing all fossil-fuelled cars with their electric equivalents would not be a sustainable option.

So, for many people who have only occasional need for a car, using a rented electric vehicle could be a sustainable solution for themselves and the community.

This workshop will consider Shaftesbury's dependence on cars, and the benefits of an electric car club that would enable people to have occasional use of shared vehicles.

Those joining us include Hugh King and Revd Lorna Johnson who are associated with Bridport Co-housing, a project establishing a neighbourhood of affordable and sustainable eco-homes which wants to include a car club for residents. We're also lucky to have input from Gustavo Montes de Oca who is central to Tisbury's electric car club linked to Nadder Community Energy. Gustavo will share his experiences and describe the benefits of a facility that operates as a community service.

If there is sufficient interest then this workshop could lead to development of a local initiative - perhaps in conjunction with others from the wider area.

We continue to be cautious about Covid, please stay away if you are unwell or have tested positive and respect one another's space. We'll keep the room ventilated and mask-wearing is optional. Meeting will start at 7.30.
