Darwin Ecology (our local professionals ecologists) are working with Shaftesbury open Spaces group on the ponds at Breach Common. They are silted up and over grown so require some clearance to improve the habitat for Great Crested Newts and other species. They will be out tomorrow on Thursday 19th and Friday 20th from 9.30 - 5 and need some help with vegetation clearance, habitat piles etc. Get in touch with Mariko on 07892 799575 or comment on here if you want would like to lend a hand. Thanks! (This will be a small group working outdoors so fairly low risk and able to remain distanced from each other - but of course only join if you are feeling well)

Central XR have asked us to fill out a form about our XR group & the role we think the South West groups should take in October - the questions are attached as images. If you want to input or take part then comment below - we are also MEETING TOMORROW (WEDNESDAY 28th) 1pm GROSVENOR TO DISCUSS THIS & SEND OUR RESPONSE. I know it's very last minute so if you can only respond online then that's ok! I am also very keen to find people who want to take on a coordinating role in our group, so let me know. Here are the questions we need to respond to: Please read out to your group, before filling in the form below "The XR October Rebellion is 6 weeks away! We start on the 7th October and we stay for as long as we can, as long as it takes. Book the time off work now! Tell you friends and bring your families. It's going to be bigger, more effective, joyful, heartfelt, connecting, one of the most important and meaningful things we could be doing! And the South West needs to decide how it wants to be involved!" Some Things to Consider In this case 'South West' means Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire, GloucestershireThe idea for the October Rebellion is to again occupy multiple (more than last time) sites in central London, from 7th October. This time, regions will be more autonomous in the choosing of, organisation of and decision making for their sites, with as much or as little support from 'central XR' as they'd like.As far as possible, regions will find the coordinators to run their site. There is a central circle 'Action Support' dedicated to providing help where regions need it; advice, suggestions, and role filling where necessary. There are 2 forms: 1) In this email, is to help us decide fairly quickly, as a region, if we want to take a site of our own. 2) Arriving in everyone's inbox (the whole network) this afternoon from central XR, through Action Network, is about finding out the roles individual people want to take on. Rest assured there is no duplication Please complete both. Before the rebellion coordination roles can be anything from a few hours a week, to full time, depending on what you can offer and the capacity of the whole team that assembles.During the action, as a rough guide, if you're there for 4 days or more and would like to take on a coordinator role, we'd love that!! You'd be working in a shift pattern agreed by your team, so everyone can get enough sleep and there'll be enough time to get arrested too, if you'd like!

"Shaftesbury Civic Society is holding its annual Civic Day and AGM on Wednesday 12th June and we would like to invite Planet Shaftesbury to be part of this event. In many ways the Civic Society and yourselves share similar aims and values and it would seem appropriate for our members to learn more about your work and aspirations for Shaftesbury at a local level. To that end we should like to invite you to put forward a speaker to talk to us, for about half an hour, after our very short AGM. The schedule would be for you to speak at about 1.15 pm.  In addition, during the morning, in the Town Hall, we would be delighted if you wished to provide a stand for our Civic Day, which is aimed at celebrating pride in our special town and celebrating the diversity of organisations that this community supports. Setting up time would be from 09.00-10.00 with doors open to the public from 10.00 until 1pm. Tables and chairs will be provided. We are very keen to stress the local aspects of your work and its relevance to our daily lives here in Shaftesbury.  Please let us know as soon as possible if you are able to take part and provide a speaker, to enable us to include you in the publicity. " Both great opportunities to make links with a well established local group! Please comment below if you would like to 1) give a talk about Planet Shaftesbury at their AGM 2) run a stall at Civic Day with leaflets and information on PS (we also need people for this at Marnhull Flower Show 27th July)

Jean has been in touch to offer us a free table at the Marshall Flower Show on 27th July where we can display information and encourage others to get involved with Planet Shaftesbury. This year climate change is the theme of the show, reflecting their concerns about the effects of global warming. I think this would be a great opportunity and am sure by July we will have some material to take along! I have provisionally said we would be interested, so welcome your thoughts on this. They are also looking for local charities to link to a decorated bug-hotel in their charity class so if anyone has any suitable ideas please comment them here or mention them at the next meeting and I can pass that on.
